FAQ’s

What is acupuncture/what is chiropractic?

Acupuncture is a health care delivery system that has been practiced on humans and animals for over 2000 years.   This comprehensive system is focused on correcting energy imbalances by stimulating specific points on the body for both treatment and prevention of illness.  There are many different styles of acupuncture and many ways to stimulate acupuncture points such as massage, needling, burning herbs, light, electric stimulation and others.   O’Hara has studied many different treatment styles to accommodate the needs of her patients.  Chiropractic has been recognized as a health care delivery system for the past 120+ years, however spinal manipulation has been practiced by many cultures for centuries.  It is a system of correcting imbalances in the spine by various means of manipulation.

What conditions can acupuncture/chiropractic treat?

Acupuncture has been used for a wide variety of problems.  By regulating and strengthening the body’s immune defense and stress response, acupuncture can potentially help any problem, at least indirectly.  Patients generally seek acupuncture treatment for pain, arthritis, digestive issues, neurological issues, mood disorders, PTSD, fertility issues, chronic illness, hormonal issues and much more.   Chiropractic care is best known for eliminating pain and restoring normal strength, posture and flexibility, however by balancing the spine, all body systems are affected. Both systems work well together.

Are there any risks or side effects?

There are no known negative side effects to acupuncture, however there is a rare risk of infection or of puncturing an organ with a needle. O’Hara takes every precaution to avoid these very rare complications by using short, single use sterile needles.  Risks of getting chiropractic care are also very rare and include sprain, vascular injury or exacerbation of symptoms. Dr. O’Hara uses very gentle techniques and has been practicing 30 years without incident.

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and sharp and do not cause significant pain. Occasionally a pinching sensation can be experienced which is not any worse than plucking an eyebrow.  The vast majority of patients feel totally relaxed during their acupuncture sessions.  Chiropractic adjustments are quick and generally not painful.

How often do I need to come in?

Depending on the treatment regimen, the patient is scheduled 1 or 2 treatments per week. As you progress, the treatment frequency is lowered.

Are acupuncture and chiropractic covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans cover acupuncture/chiropractic treatments. Some have limitations.  Our office will determine your benefits.

How long does a visit last?

Depending on the type of treatment, visits last 45 minutes to 1.25 hours.

What happens on the first visit?

I have been seeing Dr Kay for over 2 years. I have fibromyalgia and was having a lot of pain. I was taking Lyrica and Cymbalta but was still having pain in addition to all of the side effects of these medications. Acupuncture  has helped me become mostly pain free and I have also stopped taking Lyrica and Cymbalta. I am feeling better now than I have in years. I have lost ~20 pounds since I started seeing Dr Kay. I did try acupuncture years ago with a different practitioner but didn’t find any relief for my pain. Everytime I see Dr Kay she is very thorough and  focused on what is going on with my body at that particular time.
